(Notice the sick, beautiful, sweet baby trying to enjoy the holiday...)
It's been quite the eventful week at the Kroner house. Early this week, Kevin and I started to notice that Abby wasn't looking like herself and was probably experiencing yet ANOTHER ear infection. Well, Tuesday I had to go to NY for the night but I was still worried she was coming down with something. I called her school to check on her during the day and they said she wasn't her normal happy self and that they also thought she might be coming down with something. Rather than wait for our check-up on Friday, Kevin said he'd take her to the pediatrician that afternoon.
Last month when we were at the pediatrician for her 9 month checkup, her iron levels were very low (9 when 12 is normal). Since then, she's been on supplements to try to increase her iron storage / hemoglobin levels. Well, at the appt, they not only checked her ears (to find ear infections in both ears AGAIN), but they also checked her blood and her hemoglobin had decreased to 8.0. Ruh roh...
So, poor baby was immediately sent to Children's Hospital (the regional office in Mason) for a myraid of blood tests to check her blood cell counts, iron level, you name it. The concern was that she wasn't absorbing iron despite being on supplements and iron-fortified formula.
So, imagine mom - freaking out in NYC - not able to get home to hold her baby through all of this and driving herself crazy with the "what if's" you can find all over the internet.
All, I can say is God Bless Kevin Kroner. I truly have the most amazing, calming, wonderful husband and daddy to Abby. He kept a baby calm in the waiting room for an hour, held her through blood being drawn, got medicine in her, and cuddled her until she fell asleep. And kept her mother sane from 600 miles away.
By the time I was on my way home the next day, we had gotten the results from our pediatrician. Turns out when they tested her hemoglobin levels at the hospital, the results were a 11.5 - still a little low but clearly the dr office reader was WAY off. So, approximately $400 later and a lot of worrying later, Abby is just perfect, no major anemia, no other blood disorders that are throwing her hemoglobin levels off. Just a tired baby with two ear infections and on her last bout of antibotics before tubes :(
Oh yeah, and yesterday when I picked her up from school, we had another pleasent surprise - pink eye in both eyes!
After all the worrying of the week, I'm pretty calm with the latest predicament. Nothing that eye drops, antibotics, and cuddling from mom and dad can't fix.
